work. There are definitions provided for the more technical and scientific

Child of the Civil Rights Movement By: Paula Young Shelton
Paula is the daughter of civil rights activist Andrew Young.
Her family is from New York and living during the time of the Jim Crow Laws. Her
family sees the story of the freedom riders and her family decides to move to
Georgia. There her family finds the discrimination to be no different. Each
time the family is told they can’t enter Paula is sad. Later, Paula and her
family meet up with her uncle, Martin Luther King Jr., and some of his friends.
She listens to their secret meetings which lead up to the march to Montgomery.
The book ends with the voting rights act of 1965 being passed.

Eight Days Gone By: Linda McReynolds
A spaceship sets off to go to the moon. Everyone from Earth
is watching for it to land. Armstrong takes his first step on the moon. The
other astronauts walk on the moon too. They take samples and put up a flag.
They return safely and everyone is happy.

John, Paul, George, and Ben are all of the founding fathers
of America. Thomas is also thrown in there. John was bold and had the biggest
signature. Paul was noisy and yelled to everyone that the red coats were
coming. George was honest and couldn’t tell a lie. He became the first
president. Ben was clever and liked to give everyone advice. Then there was
Tom, who was very independent. He wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Olivia’s Birds By: Olivia Bouler
Olivia was eleven years old when she heard about an oil
spill in the Gulf Coast. She loved to watch the birds when she would go to
visit her grandparents. She wants to help the birds, so she decides to take her
love of birds and skill at drawing and make it into a fundraiser. She asks the
National Audubon Society if she can draw pictures for people that donate. They
allow her to, and she ends up raising $150,000.

Green parrots were abundant in the wild until the 1960’s. Deforestation
began with the growing population. Along with that war happened and the people
brought with them invasive species. By the end of the 60’s there were very few
parrots left. People finally realized things needed to change, and started
doing things to bring the parrots back.
